Free Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Tips – Step By Step
 by: Robert Toth

Before submitting your site to search engines it is very important to optimize your website. If you can not afford a search engine optimization service, make sure to follow our search engine optimization tips to have your web site well optimized for the top placement in search engines.

Step 1. – Analyze your competition

The best way to start optimizing your web site is analyze your competition. Take a look at the web pages that currently have top rankings (Top 10) on Google and try to find out what these pages have done to get these rankings. – analyze the first top ten web sites related to your branch

  • analyze keywords they are using
  • look at their source code, meta tags
  • look at their keyword density
  • look at their comment tag, alt tags, title tag
  • internal and external links on their websites
  • look how many sites linking to them
  • check out the quality and link popularity of sites that are linking to your competitors
  • look how many pages they have

After all you can tell is it easy to beat your competition or it is not.

Step 2. – Start to improve your website with quality content

When optimizing your website always use keyword in the meta tags which are reflected in your page. It is not going to help your search engine ranking if the page has nothing to do with the topic. a) Choose the right keywords

As mentioned before, analyze your competition but never use the same keyword and description tag. There are two great resources for finding out the most effective keywords. – Overture – WordTracker b) Creating meta tags – TITLE Tag

The most important tag is the Title tag, because it is in the head section of your website and many search engines use it. Title tag should be short (about 14 words), descriptive and to the point. The title is appeared on first line in the search engines. c) Creating meta tags – DESCRIPTION Tag The next important meta tag is description tag. It describes content of your web page

  • shouldn´t be longer than 120 characters
  • description is for the search engines not for the viewers to see

d) Creating meta tags – KEYWORD Tag

  • use the most important keywords that your website represent
  • we recommend to use 5 keywords separated by a commas
  • one keyword should have 1 – 3 words

e) Creating meta tags – ROBOT Tags

Step 3. – Check your website URL before submit to search engines.

Your website should be finished without errors:

  • no broken links
  • no spelling mistakes
  • have a good design
  • no html tag mistakes
  • have a site map

Step 4. – Submit your website to search engines

Submit your website into the most important search engines, it brings you the most of traffic. Make sure to submit your URL for free to www.google.com, www.yahoo.com, www.altavista.com, www.alltheweb.com, www.excite.com, www.lycos.com, www.webcrawler.com, www.Alexa.com, www.Jayde.com, www.whatuseek.com, Open Directory (The ODP powers core directory services for some the most popular portals and search engines on the Web, including AOL Search, Netscape Search, Google directory, Yahoo directory, Lycos, DirectHit, and HotBot, MSN and hundreds of others). DMOZ and Yahoo Directory listings are tremendously valuable. There are a lot more free and paid search engines and directories to submit, but if you do not have time to search for and submit, you can also use our search engine submission service.

Step 5. – Build your link popularity (offpage optimization)

Next significant step you should do with your website is build your link popularity. Link Popularity is the number and quality of other websites that link to your site. Top rankings depend on your link popularity. It can be done with creating a quality reciprocal links from related web sites and Internet directories.

We can build for you a non-reciprocal and reciprocal links if you choose our link building service.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and web-positioning techniques.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and web- positioning techniques.

Optimisation for search engines rankings

The Fact That Matters!!! Nearly 99.99% of these visitors came from search engines including Google, Yahoo, MSN and AOL….etc.

Top 10 search engine rankings. Everybody wants it but a few achieve it.Search engines have always been an important source of traffic for many marketers. Achieving high search engine rankings should be one of your goals because it can be profitable in the long run.

It has many names (SEO, positioning, and web promotion, etc.) but the objective remains the same – improve your position on search results to get a huge source of traffiic without spending large sums of vital capital in advertising expenses.

Naturally, the most common objective for search engine optimization campaigns is to bring in targeted leads to ecommerce sites. A high degree of pre-qualification is possible, since SEO allows you to attract only those who are actively seeking for very specific products or information.

How to optimise for ranking.

This subsection is a guide to basic search engine optimisation that is aimed at the beginner, but also may serve as a basic refresher on the fundamentals of SEO techniques.

There are plenty of more advanced optimisation tips and tutorials in the rest of the site, but to be fully comprehensive on search engine optimising it is essential to start from the basics.

In this section we shall answer the following basic SEO related questions:

How do search engines index pages? What can search engine spiders ’see’? What makes pages rank more highly? How do I optimise my web pages? How much optimising will it need? Is ranking based just on page content?

Web-promotion through search engine optimisation is a task requiring both skill and knowledge, but with the help of the guides and tutorials in this section, you too can improve your search engine rankings.

Here you will learn about doorway pages, hallways, and redirection. You will become acquainted with the main principles of such specialist things as cloaking, (or stealth submissions), and hidden links.

Doorway pages, also called ( gateway pages or bridge pages or jump pages or hook pages or smart pages or cloaked pages ), are no more than any page of a site which has keywords that may be found in a search. By entering your site from a search engine at such a page, visitors experience the page as a ‘doorway’ to your web site.

You may be tired of hundreds of rules about the search engine optimization – a.k.a SEO. You may find difficult to create new contents for search engine traffic. You may have several well- optimized pages but still have small number of visitors!

“The key to success is to optimize pages without making them read as though they were written for a search engine”.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is essential for the success of almost every website. The majority of traffic to websites is brought in by search engines. Keywords are an important part of SEO. Unfortunately, many website owners overdo it. Keywords are one of the most important tools in ranking high on search engines. Abuse them and you will suffer the consequences.

The ultimate solution however is to make the full dynamic site accessible to spiders, without them ever knowing that its dynamic. This requires the most (and most technical) work, but it means that no special static pages are required at all, and the full dynamic content can be accessed.

As an Internet Marketing Consultant, my services are all geared towards helping my clients to maximise the potential of their promotional and sales campaigns via the internet.

I tailor my marketing services uniquely to each client. The needs of each client, and indeed of each website, are always different, even unique.

My focus is always to identify my client’s true needs and focus upon the things that matter. What matters is not blind numbers, not hits or statistics. What matters is to make the business more successful.

My Internet marketing services are based on using whatever tools or methods are best suited to maximising the bottom line results of my clients’ marketing endeavours.

Above all, I offer my years of expertise as a specialist in Internet marketing, having served well over 300 e-business clients. In an industry where, right from the beginning, 95 percent of all companies fold without ever even recovering their server and bandwidth costs, not one of my clients has ever gone bust.

Keys to Successful Internet Marketing

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

So you’ve started your business and you have a website up and running, now you need to know how to successfully market your business on the internet. With new internet marketing technologies developing daily, sometimes the choices seem confusing. Which internet marketing tools are going to yield results?

Search engine registries and reciprocal links are obviously very important to promoting your website, but internet marketing doesn’t stop there. Autoresponders, affiliate networks, and discussion forums are all effective tools that help you market and manage your website.

Autoresponders help you process email requests automatically, rather than spending hours trying to navigate your inbox. Does your website offer customers free catalogs? Does your business send out sales letters or offer customer support services? If so, then autoresponders can dramatically decrease your workload while increasing your sales, by automatically responding to customer requests and questions.

Affiliate programs also increase your exposure on the web. When you join an affiliate network, your site will be linked to others in the affiliate, and the affiliate network provider will promote your website for you. The incentive for them to do this is that they will get a small percentage of the sales they send to you ? a small price to pay for the exposure they provide.

Discussion forums are becoming more and more popular, and hosting one on your own website can be a very effective internet marketing tool. Anytime a comment or article is posted on the forum it increases the number of keyword searches that will link results to your website. Discussion forums require a little bit of upkeep, but the technology is user-friendly and they can be well-worth the effort.

When it comes to internet marketing, creativity is key. Don’t stop after you register your site with the search engines. The above tips are easy to follow, inexpensive ways to promote your website while making your business easier to manage.

PageRank for Websites: Is There More to the Web?

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Google’s PageRank has been around for years, and in the opinions of a lot of e-business owners, it can make or break a site. Lately, with Google’s fingers in every pie, it seems important to remind everyone that there is more to a website than just PageRank. PageRank is a term that relates to the algorithm that Google uses to rank a website in its search engine. Coined by Larry Page, one of the engineers of Google, PageRank has come to mean so much to webmasters and SEO’s that it dictates how we market a website. But let me coin a few terms of my own. (Or, borrow them from others, perhaps?) And while some of these concepts are included in the PageRank algorithm themselves, it’s often helpful to be reminded that there are many factors that a webmaster should concentrate on, and not just one overwhelming aspect. It bothers me that Google’s toolbar’s PageRank indicator “measures the IMPORTANCE” of a page; important to them, perhaps, especially in light of the release of the Google Toolbar for Firefox on July 7th. But lack of PageRank doesn’t mean that your site isn’t important. So how do you let the search engines, Google in particular, know that? This article is a collection of the phrases that indicate the behavior of search engines today.

FreshRank

Currently there is patent application in the US Trademark Office from Monika Henzinger, published on June 30, 2005, that certifies that she has a way of determining a document’s “freshness” which we will name FreshRank, coined such by Michael Martinez on Cre8asite Forums. The abstract says that one of the problems is that the “last modified since” attribute isn’t always correct, and even if a webmaster has figured out they can change the date, it still doesn’t fool Google. What Google looks for is actual modified content. As far as how Google determines how old a document may be is still somewhat of a secret. Monika is attempting to patent a more explicit form of freshness, since not all search engines use the “last modified since” attribute anyways, and stating that search engines need a more reliable way of determining overall updated content. Well, I for one, happen to agree.

But consider this: some websites don’t need to be updated. Does this mean they aren’t fresh? Not likely. Think for a moment about that government bill that was put into action 10 years ago. No new fresh content there. What about the scientific formula for penicillin? I don’t think that changes much. And what about the historical account of the Trojan War? Pretty much stays the same. Most businesses adopt terms and conditions or a privacy policy that is designed to stay the same. So it’ll be interesting to see how the patent, if approved, will pan out in regards to this type of information. There is no mention in the patent application of “gauging whether the page continues to be a currently relevant citation.” Even Google mentions how fresh a website’s content is as a problem in a recent patent application. So it will be interesting to see if the new FreshRank will truly help. As my grandfather used to say, “Well, we will just see what we’ll see.” Indeed.

TrustRank

This is a term trademarked by Google. Google has this to say about TrustRank: “Web spam pages use various techniques to achieve higher-than-deserved rankings in a search engine’s results. While human experts can identify spam, it is too expensive to manually evaluate a large number of pages. Instead, we propose techniques to semi-automatically separate reputable, good pages from spam. We first select a small set of seed pages to be evaluated by an expert. Once we manually identify the reputable seed pages, we use the link structure of the web to discover other pages that are likely to be good. In this paper we discuss possible ways to implement the seed selection and the discovery of good pages. We present results of experiments run on the World Wide Web indexed by AltaVista and evaluate the performance of our techniques. Our results show that we can effectively filter out spam from a significant fraction of the web, based on a good seed set of less than 200 sites.”

The paper they are referring to is a 12 page abstract dealing with Google’s TrustRank, found at Stanford University’s site. In essence, TrustRank is a way to cut down on spam and filter out content that is not relevant to the searcher in order to bring them results they really want. While there is no way to implement techniques to include Google’s TrustRank currently, what this means to you as a website owner is simple: don’t spam the search engines! Spam is defined as email related in Webster’s, but the term has come to mean any unwanted information or propaganda that may have been received through deceptive measures on the part of the sender. To a search engine, spam is hyperlinked pages that are intent on misleading the search engine. So as long as you are genuinely trying to keep your nose clean, you should be okay, right? Generally, this is true, but you should still be careful. The best policy is to develop your website for your visitor, and not for the search engines; you’ll do well every time.

NicheRank

This is a term that I’m simply making up. If you contact the Small Business Administration for a packet for starting a business, you get a 26 page questionnaire about your niche product. There are many aspects to NicheRank. Ideally, offering a product that no one has ever though of before is the best niche to be in. Not everyone can have that brand new invention that everyone just has to have, however. So offering product in a saturated market is still possible, but you still have to find your niche market. What is it about your product that is different from all the rest? Why should someone buy from you instead of from one of your competitors? Whether it’s about price, or freebies with purchase, unbeatable customer service, or selection, you are not just selling a product; you are selling your company. And this is what makes up NicheRank. How effective will you be at penetrating a field, and then stealing some of that market share? I can’t remember what movie this was in, but the saying “You gotta have a gimmick” is still tried and true. So what’s your gimmick? How does it apply to search engines?

In an article by Scottie Claiborne, she talks about the infomercials that you see on TV. One in particular, the “Chocolate Dream”, was nothing more than an age-old concept: the double boiler. But this established product was given a new spin by the makers of the “Chocolate Dream”, which made it seem like something you just couldn’t live without. I love watching those shows on HGTV that turn old things into new things. They are still the same basic widgets, but they get a makeover to turn them into something different. I’m not a garage saler by nature, as I just don’t have the time, but I like seeing what possibilities those old items have for becoming potentially new ones. What’s your “Chocolate Dream”?

Search engines are excited over new things, even if you have an “old thing” that seems new. In fact, search engines penalize for duplicate content, and may not rank those sites at all. So you have to make your product different than the rest of them out there, even if it IS the same thing. And that’s NicheRank.

ContentRank

You’ve heard the old saying: Content is King. Too many times someone develops a website and concentrates on how pretty or flashy it has to be. As an SEO, updating content to keep a website fresh has always been a priority. Now, more than ever, as the algorithms of search engines change (almost daily, it seems) and the jump-on-the-bandwagon-follow-Google’s-lead patenting of every idea that pertains to search engines (this month there are eight that I could count), webmasters have to concentrate on what their website has to say, and not just a bunch of pretty pictures, JavaScript, and flash intros. But then again, I knew that already. In a way, the search engine patent craze is forcing webmasters to do what they should be doing already, and get them back to basics: words.

When a visitor is using a search engine, they use words to find what they are looking for. So in turn, a website uses words to connect with that visitor. So how does that search engine know which bunch of words are relevant, and which are not? By comparing them to all the other words on the site. Keyword meta tags are still used to tell the search engines in a glance what the site is about, but thanks to a bunch of unscrupulous web designers and SEO’s, meta tags are not as important as they used to be, because it is too easy to manipulate search results using keywords alone. Keyword meta tags in relation to the actual words on a page determine how important those keywords actually are in a search, or “keyword density”. Simply put, keyword density is how dense those keywords are in the actual content of a webpage. But it’s not just about individual pages; it’s about the scope of keyword density in general for an entire site. If a page has nothing to do with what the website pertains to, then most likely, it won’t get listed.

LinkRank

If you’ve done any reading at all on search engine optimization, then chances are you’ve come across link popularity and its importance in optimization. PageRank initially measured how important a website was by its back links, or a search engine’s perception of votes for a site. But you can’t do any kind of search on link popularity without coming across a dozen or so ads that tell you that you can just buy your back links. It seems to be pretty popular these days to purchase your back links. This is not to be confused with hiring an SEO. Using an SEO consultant to market all aspects of a website is probably a far better long term investment than to buy a bunch of links. We live in a world where we’ve gotten used to getting what we want RIGHT NOW. Whatever happened to patience is a virtue? Anymore, patience is a nostalgic concept, and is almost as antiquated as dime-store sodas.

There are changes in the works to help curb the back links controversy, with seven new search exclusions, by placing a hold delay on newer sites that have launched with seemingly huge amounts of back links before the site has even had a chance to take off. John Scott of Cre8asite Forums offered an opinion based on a source who used to work with a current Google employee:

“The probation does not apply to new sites. It applies to links. When the algorithm was deployed certain older links were grandfathered in. After that, links will be (are being) given partial credit, and be essentially on ‘probation.’”

“It applies to links, not sites. And the age of the link is not the only factor. The IP range of the links and other considerations are made, and the person who I discussed this with said that Krishna Bharat is at Google primarily to develop and implement this new algorithm. It is supposed to radically change the way links are evaluated.”

Spammers have traditionally harvested links in the way that my neighbor harvests soybeans: more is more. But it’s the relevant links that achieve the well placed rankings. Spammers artificially inflate search engine rankings through many links, most of which don’t relate to the sites content whatsoever. Gone are the days of link farms; I tried to search for one the other day, and couldn’t find a single one. Now it is the day of the “directories”. When compiling links for a client, we get a lot of requests for link exchanges. A site, for example, that relates to search engine optimization should stick to links to other sites that have to do with the Internet and search engines. So why on earth would they want to exchange links with Bahamas Vacation Packages? It seems that the way to get around the non-relevant links these days is to create a directory with many different categories that relate to just about anything. I can’t stress enough that these things are going to be examined by the search engines before too long, and it is best to just not partake. It is very difficult to pass up a link exchange for a new webmaster, especially when they are striving so hard to get those inbound links. But it just isn’t worth it.

AgeRank

I’ve known several a-company that has rushed out to register a domain name just in case they need it in five or so years. This might be a good idea for now, but in five years, will it matter? No one knows. AgeRank is a fairly new idea that has occurred to webmasters as far as importance to search engines. There are a lot of sites out there that exist for the sole purpose of spamming. And with Google’s recent stance on spamming (just look at the infamous Traffic Power fiasco), search engines are taking into account the longevity of a domain as well as all the other factors. However, all of the webmasters out there with brand new sites can take heart: it is theorized that AgeRank only makes up about 1% of the PageRank algorithm. After all, it should matter too much that a website that has been around for years should have more importance than a new site, especially if the new site has far more relevance to what the searcher is looking for. Google’s number one goal is to bring the visitor the most relevant search results.

There is, however, a patent application in the works that Barry Schwarz of the SEO Round Table calls this the “sandbox effect,” because it’s a place where the new sites can where they can all play nicely away from the real sites until they’ve had a chance to prove themselves. In an explanation of why new sites rank well at first, then drop into obscurity, Schwarz said, “the only pattern I see from the threads is that these are new sites. I see a wide range of back links reported, a wide range of styles of on-page optimization. Only pattern is the site was launched after December.” The patent will be just another weapon in the arsenal against spammers. Those spammers ruin it for the rest of us, don’t they? But it seems that it could work for new sites as well, contradicting the idea of a damaging sandbox effect. Google cites two current problems with the way search engines work: FreshRank and LinkRank. The sandbox effect will simply delay PageRank for a site, so as to give PageRank validity again, and not just something any old Joe with enough cash can simply purchase. So for the small business owner, this can mean something important. For the spammer, however, it could be devastating.

Conclusion

Google’s PageRank isn’t going anywhere-at least not yet. Perhaps during the PageRank blackout in late May, 2005 had some webmasters celebrating that PageRank finally bit the dust, though most of them worried it wasn’t coming back, especially those that purchased theirs. But it did, of course. So while PageRank plays, in my opinion, wreaks far too much havoc upon the mental stresses of any webmaster or SEO, and has far too much importance in the minds of some, it’s probably around for good, but bringing back the original purpose of PageRank can only mean good things for those who are truly deserving.

There is a rumor that there are going to be some major implementations of these changes sometime this summer. Even though this is a rumor, it is one that makes me cringe a bit. Humans don’t like change; we are creatures of habit-me especially. But change I will, because that is what the industry is all about. I believe some of the change will have to do with those concepts outlined in the many patent applications, and link changes will be the first to start. I’d bet my firstborn on it.

My goal in writing this article today is to remind you of the importance of doing what you should do best: concentrating on your website, and what it has to say, and what it means to your visitors, instead of what it may mean to search engines. This isn’t a game in which the competitor with the most money wins. When you have that down, everything else will fall into place.

Here are three Adsense Tips, together with the required HTML code, to dramatically increase CTRs and Google Adsense revenue.

1. Correct HTML Code to Include Images or Graphics Above An Adsense Leader Board Block:

Expert SEO Forums have been abuzz over a new Adsense tip which has seen a dramatic increase in CTR’s.

Many webmasters have reported increases over 400 percent after adding four images, expertly positioned horizontally over a 4 block Adsense Leaderboard, with no border.

I don’t see any reason why this would not work on smaller blocks, but you would have to alter the following HTML accordingly.

Here is the HTML code you should use to align the images directly over the ads — please be cautioned, so as not to breach Google’s TOS, you should not use any other text around these images, apart from the required Adsense code:

[table cellspacing="0" width="728" border="0" cellspadding="0"]
[tbody][tr]
[td width="182"][img src="X" /][/td]
[td width="182"][img src="X" /][/td]
[td width="182"][img src="X" /][/td]
[td width="182"][img src="X" /][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td colspan="4"]
GOOGLE AD CODE HERE 728×90
[/td]
[/tr]
[/tbody]
[/table]

NOTE: Please do change all [ ] brackets above, to the required HTML brackets < >.

Here is one of the relevant threads at SEO forums that has a clear “graphic” example, with before and after pictures clearly depicting how to add these images:

Forums Digital Point – Quadrupled Adsense CTR’s thread

A website with thousands of drawings of little Piggies, was responsible for starting the above thread!

2. Maximize Google Adsense CTRs using the Competitive Ad Filter to exclude low-paying Blog related URL’s:

Have you ever had days where 50 clicks would pay you the grand total of $1.50 – well that’s the combined power of 3 cent clicks or low-paying Blog related ads. working against you.

This post Maximise CTR with Adsense for Blogs at the Shaolin Tiger blog gives you a good list of around 50 URL’s to include in the “Competive Filter” of a Google Adsense account:

This will naturally filter out the low-paying Ads which Blog software and related domains seem to serve up.

3. Adding a Double Block of Large Rectangle Adsense Blocks at the End of each Post or Webpage

A number of the high-trafficked blogs, add a double block of 336×380 “Large Rectangle” blocks at the very end of a Post or Webpage, just as the visitor is about to leave.

Makes sense – a visitor is about to leave, and has one of two choices:

(a) visit another page on the site, or

(b) click on a high “paying” Google Adsense ad, prior to leaving the site

Serving them with a wide-choice of Adsense ads in the format which is statistically proven to have the best CTR, is an obvious choice. Trialling this placement has made a dramatic improvement in CTRs for the Marketing Defined blog.

So go ahead, use these 3 Adsense Tips to make a dramatic increase in your CTR’s.

How to Increase Your Search Engine Ranking
 by: Karen Martin

The methods employed to increase your search engine rankings may seem like rocket science to you, so you have probably avoided dealing with this issue. I am here to tell you – the time has come to face your website! A high search engine ranking for your website is so essential that if you have the slightest desire to actually succeed in your business, there is no way you can continue to avoid this issue.

At least 85% of people looking for goods and services on the Internet find websites through search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN. The idea of optimizing your pages for high search engine rankings is to attract targeted customers to your site who will be more than likely to make a purchase. The higher your page comes up in search engine results, the greater the traffic that is directed to your website. That’s what search engine optimization is about.

You can immerse yourself in all the technical information available online to figure out how to optimize your web pages to achieve higher rankings. Or you can look at a few simple items on your pages, make some small adjustments, and most likely see improved rankings quite rapidly. The first item you should examine is the title bar on your homepage.

The title bar is the colored bar at the top of the page. Look at the words that appear there when you access your home page. To increase search engine rankings, the words on your homepage’s title bar should include the most important keywords or phrases, one of which would include your company name.

Then click on all your links and examine the title bars on the pages you access. Each title bar on every single page of your site should contain the most important keywords and phrases taken from the page itself. However, avoid very long strings of keywords, keeping them to six words or less. Avoid repeating keywords more than once in the title bars, and make sure that identical words are not next to each other.

The next item to put under your microscope is your website content. Search engines generally list sites that contain quality content rather than scintillating graphics. The text on your site must contain the most important keywords – the words that potential customers will be typing into search engines to find your site.

Aim to have around 250 words on each page, but if this is not desirable due to your design, aim for at least 100 carefully chosen words. If you want to achieve a high ranking on search engines, this text is essential. However, the search engines must be able to read the text, meaning that the text must be in HTML and not graphic format.

To find out if your text is in HTML format, take your cursor and try to highlight a word or two. If you are able to do this, the text is HTML. If the text will not highlight, it is probably in graphic form. In this case, ask your webmaster to change the text into HTML format in order to increase your search engine rankings.

Next we come to what is called meta tags. I know this sounds like something out of science fiction, but it is really just simple code. Many people believe that meta tags are the key to high search engine rankings, but in reality, they only have a limited effect. Still, it’s worth adding them in the event that a search engine will use meta tags in their ranking formula.

To find out if your page is set up with meta tags, you must access the code. To do this, click the “view” button on the browser menu bar, and select “source.” This will pull up a window revealing the underlying code that created the page. If there are meta tags, they usually appear near the top of the window. For example, a meta tag would read: meta name=”keywords” content=. If you do not find code that reads like this, ask your webmaster to put them in. This may not do much for your search engine rankings, but any little boost helps.

Lastly, we come to the issue of link popularity. This is a factor that is extremely important in terms of search engine rankings. Almost all search engines use link popularity to rank your website. Link popularity is based on the quality of the sites you have linked to from your links page.

If you type in “free link popularity check” in a popular search engine, the search engine will then show you what sites are linked to your site. In the case that there aren’t many sites linked up to yours, or that the sites that are linked up have low search engine rankings, consider launching a link popularity campaign. Essentially, this entails contacting quality sites and requesting that they exchange links with your site. Of course, this requires checking out the rankings of the websites you want to link up with. Linking to popular, quality sites not only boosts your search engine ranking, but it also directs more quality traffic to your website.

Search engine rankings are extremely important for a successful Internet marketing campaign. Before you go out and hire a search engine optimization company, try taking some of the simple steps listed above, and see if you can’t boost your rankings yourself. Don’t ever ignore this all-important factor in Internet marketing. Remember, the higher your search engine ranking, the more quality customers will be directed your way.

3 Tips For Adwords PPC Management

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Adwords PPC Management Tip No. 1

Setting up an account

If you live outside of the US, different minimum bid prices hold true given the different currencies involved.

Let’s take the UK for example – in the UK the minimum bid price is £0.04 whereas the minimum bid price in the US is $0.05.

This means the cost of bids in the UK when currency is converted is significantly higher (July 2005), therefore it may be wise for you to setup an Adwords account which uses USD.

I say may because you will incur charges for currency conversions with your bank so you must look at your own particular financial situation to be sure. The new

So, if you have yet to create an Adwords account – or indeed even if you have an account (you would have to shut it down before reopening another) – sign up at http://www.google.com (not your local Google portal – eg: .co.uk) and specify dollars as your account currency. It Ccould make a significant difference to your PPC management costs.

Adwords PPC Management Tip No.2

How to increase your business profitability by hundreds of percent

Ok,

So you get a mere 4 lines of text to play with in Adwords so every single line counts. Even more than that every single letter counts (even the Capitalisation of letters will make a difference to your click through rates believe it or not).

But what’s in a name?

Your name in your ad is of course your URL. When crafting an ad, most people spend a lot of time concentrating on the headline (well worth doing as it is the most important part arguably) and on the ad text (also a good thing but not as important as you’d think).

After the headline, the next thing that prospects eyes are drawn to is…

Yes you’ve guessed it – your name – your URL

But what can I do with my URL I hear you say?

Just because you have 1 domain name doesn’t mean you need to use it. There is nothing in Google’s T&C’s that prohibits you from using a different display URL to that of your destination URL (although you will have to own the display URL and it must resolve to a pertinent page – i.e. If you’re advertising pet food, it must be about pet food and not resolve to another address dealing with a different subject entirely.

Hundreds of percent more profitable?

We have conducted tests outlined above with some of our clients. Results have ranged from 46% through to 76% more profitable domain names. These results are applicable to your bottom line profitability – remember 76% more traffic will result in a like for like increase in bottom line profits.

Your results are equally applicable on and offline, whatever grabs attention online will do likewise in offline print media.

We have also seen a 113% improvement on one of our tests (with a small sample) but we stopped the test early because our results were not statistically significant and waiting for a larger sample was a moot point.

Pop Quiz – One of my clients Jonathan Stanley has graciously allowed me to show you the results of our tests with him. Consider the following adverts and their display URL’s:

www.TalkingLeadership.com
www.ThisIsLeadership.com
www.LeadSuccessfully.com
www.MyLeadershipCenter.com
www.LeadingEffectively.com

Which of the above display URL’s was the winner and which do you think was the loser and which one do you think was the winner?

Well, the results are as follows from worst to last:

MyLeadershipCenter.com 9 clicks
LeadingEffectively.com 17 clicks
LeadSuccessfully.com 18 clicks
ThisIsLeadership.com 21 clicks
TalkingLeadership.com 37 clicks

Who would have thought it? I certainly wouldn’t but then that’s the point you will never know until you test.

My thanks to Jonathan Stanley once again at http://www.TalkingLeadership.com for allowing me the use of this example.

And what else can you do with your text? And even if you want to use your existing domain there’s plenty you can still do – remember CAPITALISATION? And then there are sub-domains or even appended directory names.

All it takes is a little creativity and you’ll find your click through rates reaching new heights with your Adwords PPC management.

Adwords PPC Management Tip No.3

Keyword Resources

It’s easy to think you have a great list of 50 or 100 keywords and stop there but you’d be missing out on the thousands of other keywords your competitors may have researched.

Brainstorming Resources Here are a few keyword brainstorming resources you should try to increase your keyword list:

http://www.kwmap.net

http://www.trackingandtesting.com/dystatic/AdwordsVolume1Wordtracker.php

http://www.lexfn.com

http://www.goodkeywords.com

http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

http://www.trackingandtesting.com/dystatic/AdwordsTip1NicheDB.php

http://www.nichebot.com

A little note on thousands of keywords: In theory you have 5,000,000 keywords available to you in your Adwords account. In practice this if used would ‘annoy’ Google as their servers would grind to a halt. Having thousands of keywords is not a good idea from a testing/tracking or PPC management perspective unless:

* You have a large number of people to conduct said tracking/testing

* You have the requisite tools to analyse results

* You are extraordinarily disciplined (along with all the people you have under your command) in implementing correct tracking URL’s

Google will cap the numbers of keywords in your account around the 50,000 level – they may allow more if your account history is good.

So don’t get too hung up on constructing thousands upon thousands of keywords – find the ones that work as quickly as you can and focus on conversion, your time will be well served.

Bonus Tip

Are you looking for somebody to help you with your Adwords PPC management? Well, perhaps before you decide upon who should help you, type in the following phrase into Google:

“bad ppc management”

Hmmm, makes you think doesn’t it?

Blogs: The Hidden Ace Up Your Sleeve

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

If it wasn’t for my blog, I wouldn’t make any online sales at all.

It’s true that I have a “regular” website, my so-called “main website,” which I first set up to sell my goods, in this case, men’s and women’s health products. It’s my workhorse, the source of most of my revenue. Most of my sales resulted from generic listings in the search engines, particually Google.

That is, until Google sandboxed me.

Some of you may have heard of the legendary Google sandbox, sometimes called, “The Goggle Sandbox Effect.” What happens is that newly listed sites rank well for about two to three weeks, then suddenly drop off the radar screen. These new sites are placed in a type of probational sandbox, away from the “real” sites.

Why does this happen, you ask? There are almost as many theories as there are SEO (Search Engine Optimization) experts. Many believe that this probation period is not related to the sites themselves, but to their links. It is believed that back link (pure link popularity) credit is placed in a reserve for a period of time (2-4 months) before it is applied to ranking and has an effect. The theory behind this is to combat PR (Page Rank) purchasers from dominating PR from the beginning. It is meant to deter spam websites.

Others believe this alleged filter that is placed on new websites is an illusion. These skeptics argue that the phenomenon merely echoes already existing Google algorithm calculations.

Whatever the reason, I got sandboxed, the rug pulled out from underneath me; shiskobobbed. The high-ranking and sales that I was receiving from my site suddenly plummented.

I was devastated. What’s a poor boy to do now?

Desperate, I wrote to a number of online SEO forums, seeking advice from the SEO gurus. Some thought it was amusing and laughed in my face. Others offered advice such as forgetting about Google for awhile and optimizing my site for the other search engines (not a bad idea). Others thought that I should continue adding content, since content is king as far as the search engines are concerned. Still others thought I should try to gain as many quality links as I should, and this would help pull me out of the sandbox (it felt more like quicksand to me.)

I committed to doing all these things, but in the meaintime, what about my website and the products that I was trying to sell, the money I was hoping to make?

I kept hearing about blogs, those personal websites that are published on the Web. As you probably know, blogs contain philosophical reflections, talk about social issues, and opinions about everything under the sun. They are usually presented in journal style with a new entry each day, or almost every day.

Some people have found out that blogs can also be used to sell products. In fact, an entire industry has evolved around commerical blogging and ways to market them. Some of these commerical blogs appear in the same journal style as the most popular blogs, while others do not look any different from a regular commerical website.

At any rate, I decided to check them out. The fact that a number of blog publishers allow you to build and post your comments for free, certainly didn’t hurt either.

I studied many of the blogs that are out there on the Internet, particually the ones relating to my niche. The more I read, the more I liked. I was surprised to learn that some of the top websites in my niche were actually blogs. They ranked high on Google and all of the other search engines. And no doupt, they were making sales.

Soon, I had a pretty good idea about how I was going to build my blog. I didn’t want to copy the others, I just needed to get an idea of how some enterprising webmasters were creating them.

Within minutes, I had created my blog, published it on the Web, and began posting and tweaking it. I inserted some HTML code to monitor my stats, and continued to work on making it a better blog. I also continued to work on my other websites, so that whenever I do climb out of Google’s sandbox, my site will get a good rating.

Not long afterwards, I made my first blog sale!

Elated, I built other blogs. The more lines you have in the water, the better chance you’ll catch a fish, right? Each was slightly different than the preceeding one, but I still hawked the same products. All have links back to my “main” website, and all have brought me sales.

I might have been down, but thanks to my new-found knowledge about blogs, I wasn’t out.

So, while I’m waiting to climb out of Google’s sandbox, I have an ace in the hole and another up my sleeve that is continuing to make sales for me – my blog. Unknowingly, I had stumbled upon one of the best ways to get my products out there before the buying public.

What I had thought was the worse thing to happen turned out to be the best thing. Had Google not sandboxed me, I probably never would have discovered the awesome marketing power of blogs!

Link Popularity

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

In today scenario when we talk about Search Engine Optimization, we also talk about one of the most important aspect of SEO, which is Link Building. But there are different types, aspects and limitations of Link Building, which would be discussed now under

1.Types of Link Building: I would be explaining this factor in a more understandable manner with giving some examples with Site1, Site2 and Site3.

a)One Way Linking: One Way Linking is a type of Link Building where a site links to another site without getting a link back

Example: Site1 links to Site2 One of the best ways of generating One Way Links is Directory Submissions

You can submit your site in different free directories like Dmoz, Yahoo Directory (Paid Also) and many others

Limitations of One-Way Linking

One of the most desired limitations of One-Way linking is time Consuming process and the confirmation of getting listed in Directories is not fixed

b)Two Way Linking: Mostly known as Reciprocal Linking, this is one of the most effective and fast method of creating quality incoming links towards your site. Two Way Linking is process of exchanging links between 2 sites of similar theme. (As per latest Google Semantic Indexing)

Example: Site1 Links to Site2 and in return Site2 Links back to Site1 The best method to create Reciprocal Links is to contact theme based sites, which you can think can be involved in your Linking Parameters and ask them for a Link Exchange with your site

There are no limitations in this type of Linking as this is one of the most effective and fastest methods of creating incoming traffic to your site.

c)Three Way Linking: This can also be termed as a better way of obtaining One-Way Links to your site, as in this process there is One-Way and Reciprocal Linking Involved

Example: Site1 Links to Site2, But in place Site2 Links Site1 on Site3

Aspects to be Looked Before While creating Links

1.The partner’s site Page Rank of the page where he has placed your link

2.Whether the page where your link has been placed is indexed in Search Engines or not

3.One most important factor is the theme of the site. Eg: If you have a site related to Web Design you can exchange links with site related to shoes or gifts, you should link with sites related to Web only

Internet Marketing Tips from a 10-Year Old?

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Can a 10-year-old teach you anything about Internet marketing? Until recently, I didn’t think so. But let me tell you what happened…

My 10-year-old son Ben and his sisters wanted to attend a musical theater class. The total price tag? $1,590!

I said they could go, but they’d need to earn the tuition money.

Well, the kids are the published authors of a children’s book called 15 Reasons I Love My Dad. It retails for $14.95. Their proposal – go door to door and sell their book until they raised the $1,590.

They decided to give people an incentive to buy the book now by running a ‘neighborhood special’ and offering it for only $10.00 instead of $14.95. In doing so, they created a reason for people to take action.

Ben wrote the first spiel:

“Hi, I’m Ben and I’m the author of 15 Reasons I Love My Dad, a fill-in-the-blank book that lets children show their dad how much they love him. I’m running a neighborhood special today. You can get the book for only $10 instead of $14.95. Would you like to buy one?”

Ben journeyed out into the world of door to door sales?and sold five books to the first 13 people he talked to. His sales conversion rate? 38%!

Ben wasn’t too happy with this. Afterall, eight people didn’t buy his book. So, he sat down with his partners to make some changes.

The kids rewrote the spiel. They added a reason why by telling their prospect they were raising money to attend a musical theater camp and they started handing the book to the person as they talked.

The combination of the reason why and putting the book in the hand of the prospect increased their conversion rate. The kids talked to eight people and sold four books. Their conversion rate? An impressive 50%.

But they still weren’t satisfied. They wanted more people to buy their book. I tried explaining to them how in the Internet marketing world, I’m happy with a one to two percent conversion rate when I first start out. They looked at me like I was crazy…The thought of knocking on 100 doors and only selling two books did not appeal to them at all!

After some review, they decided that simply asking a person if they wanted to buy a book made it too easy to say no. So, they added a stronger call to action at the end. And, they started going out in groups of two:

“Hi, I’m Ben and I’m the author of 15 Reasons I Love My Dad. (Hand the book to the prospect.) It’s a fill-in-the- blank book that lets children show their dad how much they love him.”

“And I’m Cassie. We’re raising money to take a musical theater class. We’re running a neighborhood special today. You can get the book for only $10 instead of $14.95. How many would you like to buy?”

The next time out, they went to eight houses and sold six books. Conversion rate? A whopping 75%!

No one bought more than one book but instead of being told, “No, I’m not interested” most people responded by saying, “Ohhh, I think one is enough…”

Granted, the kids have only sold 15 books and they’ve got a way to go to reach their goal of selling 159. And, their numbers are too small to conclusively say that each little change was directly responsible for the corresponding increase in sales. But, assuming their results are valid, what Internet marketing tips can you learn from a 10-year- old?

First, set a goal. Know what you want to accomplish.

Second, create a plan for accomplishing your goal. Adding a deadline always helps.

Third, start somewhere and then make changes to improve your sales. They can only get better.

Fourth, give an incentive to take action now – offering a limited time special or a limited number of items for sale creates a sense of urgency.

Fifth, tell your prospects the reason for your offer.

Sixth, have a strong call to action so people know exactly what you want them to do.

And seventh, know your numbers. Make changes designed to improve your conversion rate and then monitor what happens.

And there you go. Real world Internet marketing lessons learned from a 10-year-old.
